New Year’s Resolutions for New Parents

By now, New Year’s resolutions shouldn’t be anything new to you. And if you’re like many people, you’re probably used to breaking them around this time of the year. The concept of New Year’s resolutions is to set goals, but, as a new parent, you might find that many of the goals in your life relate to your baby. While having goals and hitting milestones is important, it’s also important to stop and set some goals for yourself. If you're still in the resolution mood, here are some new, parent-specific goals to follow throughout the year so you can be happier, healthier, and the best parent for your newborn.

Keep the Nursery Organized

When baby blankets are thrown around the floor, and diaper bags have spilled out everywhere, the nursery room can seem less peaceful. It will also take longer to find the things you need, which isn't ideal when you’re headed out the door. Organizing the nursery can take time at first, but if you keep it that way, you’ll be much less stressed and feel like you have everything together—even during the most hectic days.

Maintain Your Work-Life Balance

If you’re heading back to work, you might feel like you’re caught in an endless loop of coming in early and staying late because your boss asks you to or you feel the workload calls for it. While there’s nothing wrong with doing this every once in a while during busy weeks, it shouldn't become a habit.

Don't be afraid to draw a line between your work life and your family time. Your partner and child deserve to spend time with you, and when you get better rest along with a full tank of love and happiness, you'll be more effective on the job. Talk to your boss and don't feel obligated to put in more overtime than you need to.

Don’t Be Afraid to Take Time for Yourself

Related to the last resolution, you should also take time to recharge your batteries and take some personal time away from your baby. Many new parents feel guilty if they’re away from their baby for more than 30 minutes, but in reality, we all need a few hours a month to relax and recharge.

At the bare minimum, schedule a babysitter for one night out of the month and go meet up with your friends or set a date with your partner for a nice evening together. Tell the sitter or whoever is watching your baby everything they need to know—down to the right receiving blanket to lay down for your baby to sleep—and your evening will be stress-free. The time away from your baby will make your heart grow even fonder, as they say, and you'll return recharged and refreshed.

Record Precious Memories

In the life of a newborn, practically everything is a milestone. From the first time they visit family members to the first time they crawl, it can seem like they’re making progress every day. In the moment, you might not realize how quickly these first years of your baby's life can pass by, but down the road, you'll wish you had more videos and pictures. Commit to recording your baby’s precious moments no matter how big or small they are, and your future self will thank you.
