5 Tips for Dining Out with Your Baby

Dining out with your baby for the first time can be terrifying. It’s probably been a few months since you last visited a restaurant, but now that you have figured out a schedule, it’s time to rejoin society and eat out. Fear not, using the following tips can give you a better chance at a smooth trip to a restaurant with minimal meltdowns.

Prepare the Diaper Bag First

One of the worst experiences with a baby when out of the house is reaching into a diaper bag only to find whatever you need is missing. Whether it’s not restocking the diapers, washing and replacing burp cloths, or not having a change of clothes after a food explosion, getting caught with an incomplete diaper bag can feel like a restaurant horror story. Prep and double-check your diaper bag well before you’re due to head out the door.

Go to a Kid-Friendly Restaurant

Kid-friendly restaurants are less likely to ask you to leave if your baby is throwing food everywhere or being a bit fussy. These are typically chain restaurants or friendly local establishments. Check the menu ahead of time (especially if you have picky eaters) and consider the restaurant’s environment—it might not be the most practical to visit a fine dining establishment on your night out with the kids. Be warned that there are also other parents using your same logic for eating here. One crying baby a few tables over can cascade into a cacophony of crying children.

Order for Your Kids First

Have a game plan going into the restaurant. If you already know the menu and know what your baby or other children will want, try to order it as you sit down. Otherwise, try to find the menu online ahead of time, or skim the kid’s menu when you get to the restaurant. Make sure your kids get their food first, so they can start eating and avoid tantrums. If your baby is still breast or bottle feeding, feed them before you leave the house to keep them calm during dinner.

Bring Snacks

Food takes time to make and get to your table, even if you order for your kids as you sit down. Be prepared with snacks like puffs or crackers in case your baby or other children are already hungry. To that end, be ready with baby bibs to keep your little one clean even before your meal starts. If your baby is still breast or bottle feeding, seek out a well-designed bib that can also double as a burp cloth.

Clean Up After Your Baby

To avoid the hostess blacklist and evil glares, clean up after your baby when your meal is over. A receiving blanket is perfect to put down on the table if your baby is old enough to eat snacks at the table, or underneath the high chair. Cleaning up is a snap when all the crumbs are on the blanket. Ask for the check before or during this cleaning. After paying, be ready to make a speedy exit to keep the chances of a last-second meltdown to a minimum.
