What to Pack in a Diaper Bag

A diaper bag is indispensable for any parent leaving the house with their baby. While there are some essentials, there are quite a few items that will find a permanent place in your bag that you might initially skip over.

Diaper Changing Supplies

As the name implies, the diaper bag chiefly holds diapers. Baby wipes and a changing pad are also necessary for parents on the go. Wipes serve several functions other than the obvious diaper changes. From wiping down toys that were thrown in the dirt to cleaning baby food off the floor of the restaurant, always have enough wipes to clean up a mess. To that end, a small bottle of hand sanitizer can be worth its weight in gold.

Extra Clothes

Always have at least one extra outfit on hand in case the first gets messy—and the outfit your baby is wearing will get dirty. Between surprise spit ups and diaper blow-outs, it’s inevitable. Ideally, have multiple outfits, including onesies and pants, jackets for cold weather, and hats for either blocking the sun or keeping warm. Consider including a change of clothes for yourself as well.

Baby Blankets

No matter the season, be sure to bring baby blankets. In the colder months, blankets can be used to cover your little one, especially if you are outside. They can also double as a changing pad. In the warmer months, a baby blanket can serve as a barrier between the ground and your baby during picnics or outings. Plus, blankets can be thrown over strollers to provide extra shade while out and about. To add to their versatility, they double as burp cloths.

Food and Bibs

A hangry baby is a crying baby. Whether you are breastfeeding or using formula, having what you need to do so (and extra formula) in your diaper bag is essential. Keep a few clean bottles in the bag, and with formula, have either pre-portioned powder and water or pre-mixed, shelf-stable liquid. If you are breastfeeding, a nursing cover can provide extra shade for your baby. Either way, be sure to have a few burp cloths handy for any spit-up.

For older babies, puffs, teething crackers, and other light snacks can help avoid a hunger meltdown. Be sure to have baby bibs, especially helpful at restaurants, to keep your baby clean.

Toys

Babies get bored. And when babies are bored, they cry. Having toys in your diaper bag can keep a baby easily entertained. If your baby is teething, keep teethers in reach. A few board books can keep older babies entertained.

First-Aid Kit

A scratched knee at the playground is not uncommon. A small first-aid kit with bandages, antiseptic spray, tweezers, and alcohol wipes for cleaning should serve most situations.
