Tips for Taking Your Baby on a Camping Trip

Your entire life is liable to change when you have a baby. However, that doesn’t mean you need to give up the great outdoors. With proper planning, it’s possible to take your baby out camping, though you might want to skip the long hike to a campsite. These tips will help you enjoy camping while you’re still changing diapers.

One of the most crucial parts of camping with babies is in the planning phase: where you will camp. While it’s possible to make a hike into the wilderness, this is not recommended with a baby. Start small instead. Stay within a couple of hours of home, in case you need to abandon your plans and go back home. You also need time to change your baby, let them nap, or just have a break from the car seat. A campsite you can drive up to or even a cabin are both great first baby camping locales. Basic amenities like a bathroom can help as well.

Pile on the Layers

Check the forecast before leaving. You may need to bring layers for the family, especially your baby. Beaches and mountains have a wide range of temperatures, especially at night. Be sure to pack baby blankets as a final layer or for swaddling when it’s time for your baby to sleep. If it’s going to be cold, bring a knit hat, socks, pajamas, and sleeping bags as well as hoodies and jackets to layer.

Sleep Like a Baby

Bring a big enough tent to accommodate you, your baby, and anyone else coming on the trip. Getting sleep can prove tough, especially with potentially chilly nights and an unfamiliar sleeping area. Make sure the tent is big enough to accommodate a bassinet or portable crib.

Keep Food Consistent

If your baby is still breastfeeding or using a bottle, it’s best to stick with that. You will need clean water if you need to mix formula. Bring baby bibs, especially if you are doing baby-led weaning. Introducing new foods during camping isn’t recommended. Stick with what you already know works. Squeeze packs of pureed food will also be highly convenient while you are away from stores.

The Right Tools for the Job

Bring plenty of burp cloths as you won’t be able to do laundry easily while camping. Ones that double as bibs mean less you need to pack. Don’t bring bug repellent or sunscreen for babies younger than six months old and use long sleeves and umbrellas for shade instead. A small highchair can help during mealtime. Bring anti-allergy medication and a first-aid kit in case the unexpected happens.
