How to Take Photos of Your Newborn

You’ve made it home and started settling in with your newborn. Now, the fun can begin! Whether you are doing announcement photos or simply doing a newborn photoshoot, these tips can help you make the most out of the window of opportunity you have to capture your newborn. Remember, they are unlike many other photography subjects. Grab your baby blankets, your camera, and toys to keep your baby’s attention, and get ready to snap some photos.

Baby Blankets

Use Natural Lighting

Turn off the flash on your camera: it won’t be flattering to your baby. Instead, use natural light, whether it’s from a large window in your home or an outside photoshoot. Choosing the room with the most natural lighting means you will get the glowy, angelic lighting that makes baby photos shine.

Time It Right

Another crucial part of getting good newborn photos is in the timing. After a few weeks, you should start to get a feel for your baby’s schedule. Time your photoshoot for either when your baby is asleep or is happy, full, and content enough to sit still for photos. For best results, also factor in natural light, such as in the afternoon.

It’s All in the Prep

Get the receiving blanket you are using for a background ready before you bring your baby over. The camera should be set up already, pointed in the right direction, with settings already chosen for the first photo. Adjust lighting until you are satisfied you will get the best shot. Prepare backup clothes in case of accidents, choose a backup background, and lay out toys ready to keep your baby’s attention.

Keep Your Baby’s Attention

You’ll want to have toys either to play with and part of the shoot, or that someone can stand near you and use to get your baby’s attention. If your baby is already asleep, this won’t matter as much, but if you need to get your baby to look in a specific direction, get something they love and hold it.

Choose an Angle

The angle matters. Shoot down the nose, instead of up. With a DSLR, open the aperture all the way (that means the smallest number) to get a bit of blur, and shoot from above. Otherwise, get on eye-level with your baby.

Capture the Details

Get in close. Capture the details. Feet, hands, eyes: your baby will never be a newborn again, and will never look like this again. They are only this tiny once. Getting in close and accentuating those details helps you capture what many other photos miss.
