Have a Backyard Picnic

Grab a receiving blanket and some snacks and head into your backyard. Use age-appropriate foods. This is a great time to practice with solid food if your baby is making the transition! Let your baby wander around the grass. Bring out a few toys, as well, and have a fun lunch outside.

Mess-Free Painting

While you could break out the finger paints, there’s a way to do an art project with your baby that doesn’t involve any mess. Take a piece of cardstock, put it in a zip-lock bag, and put a few dollops of thick paint inside. Close the bag, and let your baby smush around the paint for a minute. Carefully take out the cardstock and let the paint dry.

Make Salt Dough Art

Mix up a batch of salt dough and do an art project. You could stamp your baby’s hands and feet, creating ornaments for a Christmas tree, or just create wall art. When dry, your baby can help you paint the decoration, giving you something to remember just how tiny they were in the years to come.

Blow Bubbles

Blow some bubbles for your baby. If they are old enough to crawl or even walk, they can chase after the bubbles and try to pop them. If not, they will still love the visual stimulation the bubbles blowing around provide.

Read Books

Sit back with your baby and read books. Books that rhyme especially catch the attention of younger babies and books that offer moving parts or things to touch with different textures will also be a big hit. You will soon find your baby has favorite books they will want you to read to them.

Practice Tummy Time

For younger babies who aren’t crawling, tummy time is a great way to build muscles necessary for both crawling and walking. Bring toys and other things to keep your baby’s fascination as they look around. Be sure to break out the baby blankets to give your baby a soft place to have tummy time.

Dance and Sing

You have two choices for dancing and singing. You can throw on some music, whether it’s your favorite music or your baby’s favorite songs aimed at a younger age group, or you can simply sing the songs yourself. If you want, you can even sing along with the music! Next, hold your baby and dance around! They’ll have a blast bouncing around the kitchen. Plus, dancing can make you happy and get your blood pumping, helping you feel more awake after a long night of multiple feedings.
