How to Have a Fun Staycation with Your Baby

Planning a vacation, especially when you have a baby, can be stressful. Between the prospect of taking your baby on a plane or driving for hours, you may just want to stay home. If you choose to have a staycation with your baby, you will need to find things to do to have fun around the house that will keep both you and your little one entertained. Here are a few ideas for fun things to do while taking a much-needed staycation with your baby.

Baby Bibs

A Picnic in the Living Room

Transform your living room into a picnic area for lunch. Get a basket, roll out a blanket, grab a pile of burp cloths to clean up the inevitable mess from your baby, and get the food out. If you have a smart TV, you can even turn it to a video of a forest or other natural area to bring nature and animals to you while staying inside. Enjoy snacks such as sandwiches or puffs, depending on the age of your little one. You can play games inside to complete the picnic experience.

Pitch a Tent in the Backyard

Another fun activity is to have a campout in the backyard. Pitch a tent and put out a highly versatile receiving blanket for a playmat and to help prevent your baby from getting too dirty, and you are ready to have a camping trip without leaving the comforts of home. If you need access to a changing table, diapers, and wipes, you can just head inside for a minute. During the evening, when it starts getting colder, you can use the receiving blanket to keep your little one warm. When it’s time for bed, you can take them back inside to sleep in a temperature-controlled space.

Take a Nature Walk

Walk around your backyard, looking at the natural beauty with your little one. Look at the different plants and trees, explore the garden, look for bugs and birds, and point out colorful flowers that smell good. You can also expand your walk to the neighborhood, seeing how it is different from your backyard. Are there different plants and flowers? What kinds of rocks are there? This is a great way to introduce your baby to nature. Be sure to dress up your little one in safari or outdoors clothes for the full experience, and bring a magnifying glass and binoculars.

Create Arts and Crafts

Set up the kitchen table with arts and crafts and marvel at what your baby can do. Whether it’s colored pencils or crayons, you can set up coloring pages or blank pages to let your little one let their imagination run wild. If they are a bit too young for holding their own art supplies, get a large plastic zip-top bag, put a piece of cardstock in it, a few globs of paint, and close the bag. Let your baby “fingerpaint” through the bag without getting messy. If you are working with paints or glitter or anything else messy outside of a bag, be sure to use baby bibs to keep your little one clean. Clean them before using the bibs before mealtime, and you are ready to go!
