5 Baby Activities for a Cold Winter’s Day

When the cold weather keeps you and your baby indoors, it can be hard to come up with activities. Rather than turning on the TV, try some of these ideas instead, whether it’s practicing tummy time with little ones who haven’t started crawling or snuggling up and reading new books.

Baby Blankets

Tummy Time

One of the best ways to pass some time when you are stuck inside is with tummy time. This only applies to babies who are not yet crawling or walking. Tummy time will help them build the muscles necessary for moving around and can help with fine motor skills and more. You can use a playmat specifically made for tummy time or a receiving blanket spread out on the floor with toys, loveys, and other fascinators just out of reach to encourage your little one to move and grab. A playmat built for tummy time is a great way to get this quality time and make it count. A soft, thick playmat with shapes, textures, and colors for your baby to explore can make tummy time extra fun.

Read Books

Much like tummy time, you can start reading books as soon as your baby is born. A cold, snowy day is the perfect time to read more books or read books you have been saving for just this occasion. You can make an event out of it, such as making an inside picnic with food appropriate for your baby and reading time.

Finger Painting Without the Mess

If you and your little one are in the creative spirit, try finger painting without the mess. Place a piece of card stock in a zip-lock bag. Put a few globs of paint inside, zip up the bag, and let your baby move the paint around. When your little one is done, you have a piece of art for the refrigerator, and you can enjoy it all year long.

Be a Kitchen Helper

Why not start teaching a love of making food? While your baby is likely not quite a chef, they can at least become a kitchen helper. Put your baby in a high chair, and narrate what you are doing in the kitchen. Use silly voices, dance around, and entertain your baby. Keep a few burp cloths handy, and you can let your baby have small tastes, especially if they are already eating solid food.

Build a Pillow Fort

Grab some pillows and baby blankets and build a pillow fort. You can create a maze using couch cushions or just a cozy area for some of the previous activities, such as grabbing a flashlight and reading a book. It’s a fun way for babies who are crawling to get active in a way that isn’t typical around the house. It’s also a great place for you both to take a nap, creating something special out of a day where you are cooped up.
